THE MATING

“Hrn? Flrt.” The noise of a voice wafted gently through the mass of clouds that seemed to fill my mind. It was counterpointed by a shrill barrage that slowly resolved itself into angry words being spat out with the velocity of bullets.

“I don’t recognize that language,” a voice answered nearer than the shouting person. “And since I am familiar with seventy-two languages, both extant and extinct, including the four you speak, I don’t believe they are actual words.”

Images drifted in and out through the mind clouds, until the latter suddenly dissolved into nothing, and I sat up, exclaiming, “Sandy!”

“—you almost killed me!” Sandy yelled. “Can’t you see that I’m bound here? Why do you want me dead? I thought you were my friend, and yet you bring in that insane ... insane ... goblin, and let her blow me up!”

“I am not a goblin,” Seawright said with a near snort. “I am a junior scribe third class.”

“Same difference,” Sandy spat. “You could have killed me!”

I looked around us. Two of the cabin walls were still standing, although blackened and charred. Seawright, who was on her knees next to me, was checking the contents of her messenger bag. She also was blackened and charred with a faint curl of smoke rising lazily from a clump of her hair that poked out at odd angles.

I reached out to touch one of the clumps, but it fell off and hit the ground with a soft noise.

My eyes widened as hastily I pushed the hair behind her while she was focused on her bag. “Er ... are you OK?” I asked her.

“I’m not OK. I’m nearly dead, not that you asked, which is a miracle considering the fact that the goblin tried to blow me to smithereens,” Sandy said, sniffing loudly.

I gave her a quick glance, but far from being harmed, she appeared to have been sheltered from the blast that left everything else in the remains of the cabin coated with soot and singed about the edges. I assumed the laser grid was enhanced by a protective magic that kept the occupants from being reached by things outside its bubble, and turned my attention back to Seawright. I touched her arm, asking again, “Are you OK?”

“Yes, of course,” she answered, without looking up. “I’m a junior scribe.”

I didn’t see what that had to do with the situation, but evidently, junior scribes were heartier beings than I had given them credit for. I touched my own hair, wondering if I wore the same “fork in a light socket” look that she had, but although it felt dusty and out of sorts, it didn’t seem to be smoking. “I’m glad to hear that. What happened?”

“Your goblin tried to break magic,” Sandy said, narrowing her eyes on Seawright. “Which you of all people should know isn’t going to end well. What on earth were you thinking?”

“Ah, excellent. No one need panic,” Seawright said, her voice filled with relief as she sat back on her heels. “All is well.
